Make no mistake about it, Latin-American music is "in" like never before. With dazzling instrumental combinations highlighting trumpets, guitars and, especially, marimbas, the current Latin-American rage in pop music is at a peak of excitement never known since the initial success of Xavier Cugat, Migalito Valdes, Desi Arnaz, Rafael Mendez and others in bringing such music to a broad acceptance. Unlike the previous Latin craze which accentuated intricate rhythms for dancing, today's Latin music is predominantly instrumental, yet designed for listening, which makes it somewhat of a paradox in comparison with the broad spectrum of today's pop music.
In this superbly recorded album, the Living Marimbas under the skilful direction of Leo Addeo convey the excitement and romanticism of this music.
Tijuana Taxi, Spanish Harlem and Spanish Eyes are three of the songs that have been in the forefront of what is really a native Mexican sound that's caught on and given us a new flavor in our instrumental music.
Although the marimba is similar to the xylophone and the vibraphone, it achieves a definite poetic, intimate sound of its own, far different from the other instruments. The Living Marimbas (two marimbas are heard in this collection) contribute their unique sound in giving an individual touch to each selection … from the well-known Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (Quizás, Quizás, Quizás) to Leo Addeo's new original Tijuana Rose. Along with our two featured marimbas, in the Addeo background are woodwinds, guitars, bass and percussion in musically appropriate - not to mention ear-pleasing - balance.
